Wockhardt Hospitals launches Mumbai's first Early Recovery Program, revolutionizing liver transplantation with enhanced patient care.

In a pioneering initiative, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, in collaboration with the South Asian Liver Institute, has launched the first-ever Early Recovery Program (ERP) in Mumbai.

This groundbreaking program not only offers hope to patients worldwide but also addresses the financial burdens associated with liver transplantation. The success story of a recent surgery between spouses underscores the profound impact of mutual support in the journey towards recovery.

Led by Professor Dr. Tom Cherian, Director of the transplant program at Wockhardt Hospitals Mumbai Central, the ERP draws from his extensive experience of over 700 liver transplants. With over 15 years of tenure at prestigious institutions like King’s College Hospital, London, and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, Professor Cherian has brought his expertise to spearhead transplant programs in India.

Professor Tom Cherian emphasized the meticulous planning required to send a liver transplant patient home on day seven and a donor on day six, marking a significant milestone in medical care quality.

Technical advancements in surgery techniques, pre-operative patient optimization, and sophisticated post-operative care protocols have played pivotal roles in enabling faster recovery and shorter hospital stays. These include reduced blood loss during surgery, pre-operative patient conditioning, utilization of advanced drainage systems for optimal liver graft functionality, and updated critical care techniques in the ICU.

Dr. Virendra Chauhan, Centre Head at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, expressed pride in launching Mumbai's inaugural Early Recovery Program for liver transplant patients, underscoring the hospital's commitment to delivering high-quality care.

The program's early success is evident in the heartfelt gratitude expressed by recipients like Anchu Rimo and donors like Tina Taku, who consider this second chance at life as a priceless gift. Despite being in its nascent stages, the program has shown promise, with plans underway to extend its outreach efforts to regions like northeast India.

Wockhardt Hospitals' pioneering initiative exemplifies its dedication to advancing medical care standards and enhancing patient outcomes in the field of liver transplantation.
