WHO - G20 Collaborate on Digital Health Transformation
Explore the dynamic collaboration between the World Health Organization (WHO) and the G20 in driving a transformative digital health revolution.

During the G20 Summit's health ministers meeting, the WHO and the G20 India presidency launched the Global Initiative on Digital Health (GIDH).

The Global Initiative for Digital Health (GIDH), managed by WHO, will aid in the implementation of the global Digital Health 2020-2025 strategy.

As part of this initiative, WHO will coordinate global standards, best practices, and resources to accelerate the transformation of digital health systems.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General said,

“We thank the G20 countries and the India G20 Presidency for recognizing WHO’s unique role and strengths in this area and supporting the establishment of the new GIDH network. Continued support and collaboration of the G20, development partners and international organizations will be necessary to accomplish together what none of us can do alone. WHO is committed to working with countries to strengthen their capacities and to improve access to quality-assured digital solutions for a healthier, safer, fairer future.”

Speaking at the launch, India’s Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya said,

“Today was a momentous day in the history of the G20 Health Working Group, wherein G20 countries not only identified a priority for its relevance but collectively worked towards its launch.”

India’s G20 Presidency emphasizes the new global digital health initiative. Following the 2005 WHO eHealth resolution, 120+ Member States crafted national digital health strategies. While COVID-19 accelerated digital health use, nations seek aid to shift from pilots to robust digital health infrastructure with governance, policies, and skilled health workforce.

The GIDH Initiative seeks to unite nations and partners with these goals:

1. Crafting investment plans for digital health transformation based on priorities.

2. Enhancing transparency of digital health resources reporting.

3. Fostering collaboration and knowledge sharing globally for faster progress.

4. Backing comprehensive government-led digital health governance.

5. Amplifying technical and financial aid for executing the 2020-2025 global Digital Health strategy.

WHO and partners have pledged significant support, both financially and otherwise, for the initiative’s launch.
