Uttar Pradesh Health Department Addresses Doctor Shortage

Discover how the Uttar Pradesh Health Department is tackling the critical issue of doctor shortages to improve healthcare access and quality in the state.
The Uttar Pradesh Health Department addressed a doctor shortage by hiring 749 physicians through walk-in interviews for contractual positions, including 393 MBBS and 356 specialists. These doctors will be assigned to government hospitals based on available positions.
Currently, there are over 6,000 vacant doctor positions in Uttar Pradesh, with 4,322 MBBS and 767 specialist doctors interviewed for these positions.
The selected doctors were asked to join duties at the concerned health facilities within a week. Partha Sarthi Sen Sharma, principal secretary (medical health) said,
“The postings of these doctors were planned on the basis of patient load at health facilities. Priority in posting was given to hospitals with less number of doctors.”
“Among the selected doctors, 84 were orthopaedic surgeons who will also help run trauma centres being set up across the state. There were 55 general surgeons, 59 gynaecologists, 32 paediatricians, 26 pathologists, 17 ophthalmologists, 22 ENT specialists, 16 physicians, four dermatologists, one neuro-surgeon, two plastic surgeons, seven anaesthetists, one skin specialist and one radiotherapy specialist,” the Hindustantimes.com report said.
As per the Uttar Pradesh Health Department, here are the precise salary details:
- MBBS doctors in Grade A districts: ₹50,000
- Specialists in Grade A districts: ₹80,000
- MBBS doctors in Grade B cities: ₹55,000
- MBBS doctors in Grade C cities: ₹60,000
- Specialists in Grade B cities: ₹90,000
- Specialists in Grade C cities: ₹120,000
