Union Health Minister Chairs Meeting to Review Public Health Readiness for Heatwave Management

India's health ministry held a crucial meeting to discuss strategies for managing heat-related illnesses. The meeting emphasized the importance of public awareness, data sharing between states, and equipping healthcare facilities to handle heatstroke cases.
Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, led a pivotal meeting aimed at assessing the public health preparedness for managing heat-related illnesses. Stressing the importance of continuous efforts in generating awareness, Dr. Mandaviya emphasized the need for proactive measures to mitigate the impact of heatwaves.
The meeting, attended by Dr. Bharati Pravin Pawar, the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, and Dr. VK Paul, Member (Health) of NITI Aayog, focused on crucial aspects of heatwave management strategies.
Dr. Mandaviya underscored the necessity for a central database comprising data from states to facilitate the sharing of field-level information on heatwaves, including fatalities and cases. He highlighted the significance of timely dissemination of preventive measures to minimize the severity of heatwave impacts.
Dr. Pawar advocated for the establishment of state-level and district-level committees dedicated to conducting information and awareness campaigns among the public. She emphasized the importance of equipping Ayushman Arogra Mandirs with essential amenities such as water coolers and ice packs.
Dr. VK Paul stressed the importance of ensuring adherence to guidelines at the state level and emphasized the need for disseminating treatment protocols through various platforms, including webinars.
Officials from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) provided detailed insights into the status and analysis of heatstroke forecasting, patterns, climatology, and vulnerable zones across India. It was highlighted that Heat Action Plans have been updated in 23 states, with approximately 100 districts actively conducting awareness campaigns on heatwave preparedness.
In a recent development, the Union Health Secretary issued an advisory to all Chief Secretaries, urging compliance with the National Action Plan on Heat Related Illnesses. The advisory aims to enhance the preparedness of health facilities in addressing heat-related impacts and managing cases effectively.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening public health infrastructure and raising awareness to mitigate the adverse effects of heatwaves across the nation.
