The G20 Has Urged Spine Care To Be Prioritized
Written by Susi, Arushi Sharma
The G20's recent call for the prioritization of spine care highlights a critical concern in global healthcare. Recognizing the importance of spinal health, this initiative underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to address spine-related issues.
During the fourth SPINE20 summit, G20 nations were urged to prioritize spine care as an important component of public health efforts.
The summit's suggestions stress education and access to inexpensive, high-quality care. The ASSI-hosted meeting in India brought together global spine societies.
Dr HS Chhabra, Chair of SPINE20 2023 and Chief of Spine and Rehabilitation Centre at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, states,
“The final recommendations emphasize eliminating barriers to rehabilitation for back pain and raising awareness of lifestyle’s impact on spine health.” Proposals encompass economical, evidence-based digital transformation in spine care, self-management, and preventive measures.
The summit pushes for standardized spine care, combining multiple components, and addressing primary care safety gaps.
It calls for the G20 to establish National Spinal Care programs, with experts participating in seven symposiums to offer evidence-based policy recommendations aligned with the UN SDGs.
SPINE20 recommendations, crafted by ‘Scientific Task Force’ and ‘Recommendation and Publication Taskforce’ members from 37 Spine Societies across 29 countries, cover surgical, clinical, research, and educational perspectives.
The 2023 recommendations emerged from Delhi consensus processes, refined through online meetings within the ‘Scientific Task Force’ between February and June.
