Doctors at KIMSHEALTH in India used a minimally invasive surgical technique called posterior retroperitoneoscopic surgery to remove an adrenal tumor from an 11-month-old baby girl.
Doctors at KIMSHEALTH in Thiruvananthapuram have successfully removed an adrenal tumor from the adrenal gland of an 11-month-old baby girl utilizing a minimally invasive surgical technique.
The procedure, known as posterior retroperitoneoscopic surgery, involved making a small incision on the baby's back to access the tumor, marking a significant departure from traditional abdominal surgery methods.
The young patient was diagnosed with an adrenal tumor following an ultrasound examination. Recognizing the advantages of minimally invasive surgery, the medical team opted for the keyhole approach, which not only minimized trauma but also offered a quicker recovery period.
Dr. Reju Joseph Thomas, Senior Consultant Pediatric Minimal Access Surgeon at KIMSHEALTH, explained the rationale behind the chosen technique, stating, "The location of the tumor made it ideal for our approach. We were able to remove the tumor without disturbing other organs or entering the abdomen."
The procedure, aided by a specialized instrument called LigaSure, proved highly effective in reducing blood loss and minimizing scarring, ensuring a smoother post-operative experience for the infant. Remarkably, the baby began eating and drinking on the same evening of the surgery and was even playing the next day, demonstrating the swift recovery facilitated by the minimally invasive approach.
Heading the expert anesthesiology team at KIMSHEALTH was Dr. Jacob John Theophilus, Senior Consultant in the Department of Anesthesiology. The surgical team comprised Dr. Shaji Palangadan, Senior Consultant in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Dr. Sanuja Titus Santosh, Senior Consultant in the Department of Pediatrics, and Dr. Jayanand Sunil, Consultant in the Department of Surgical Oncology.
The successful removal of the adrenal tumor highlights the proficiency and dedication of the medical professionals at KIMSHEALTH, reaffirming their commitment to providing advanced and compassionate care to patients, even the youngest ones, with complex medical conditions. This groundbreaking achievement not only ensures the well-being of the baby girl but also paves the way for further advancements in pediatric surgical interventions.
