Hinduja Hospital extends diabetes care with free insulin pumps and support for underprivileged children through its T1D initiative.

P. D. Hinduja Hospital and the Hinduja Foundation have expanded their Type 1 Diabetes Initiative (T1DI) by donating insulin pumps to 20 underprivileged children as part of the Insulin Pump Therapy Initiation Program. These children will receive ongoing support for the next five years to manage and maintain the pumps.

Since launching T1DI in 2019, the hospital has provided free, comprehensive care to around 400 children living with type 1 diabetes. The program has already invested over INR 11 crore to create a long-term, sustainable care model. Notable outcomes include a drop in average HbA1c levels from 10.2% to 7–8%, a 75% reduction in hospitalisations, and improved treatment compliance thanks to continuous education and counselling.

Type 1 diabetes is a lifelong condition that demands consistent medical attention—daily insulin injections, blood glucose tests, lab monitoring, and dietary education. The high costs often make care inaccessible for children from low-income families. The hospital and foundation cover all associated expenses to ensure life-saving treatment reaches those in need.

Gautam Khanna, CEO of P. D. Hinduja Hospital, emphasized the program’s commitment to equitable healthcare and ongoing research. Dr Phulrenu Chauhan highlighted that the donated pumps will improve quality of life and disease management. Dr Ashish Mendhi added that this initiative represents a powerful example of compassionate, research-backed care for vulnerable communities.
