In a testament to groundbreaking achievement, a neuroscientist hailing from Indian origins has been honored with the esteemed Lister Prize.
Dr. Srikanth Ramaswamy was awarded the Lister Prize for his contributions to biomedical research.
Dr. Srikanth Ramaswamy, a computational neuroscientist of Indian heritage, has been named a Lister Prize Fellow for 2023. He directs the Neural Circuits Lab, which is affiliated with Newcastle University's NUAcT fellowship and studies brain function and develops cognitive function computer models.
The brain continually modifies and responds to behavioral demands by modulating nerve cell (neuron) activity and networks via neuromodulator release. These chemical messengers regulate brain activity development by supervising neural network activities and controlling transitions between behavioral states such as sleep, alertness, distraction, and attention.
Dr Ramaswamy’s research will assess how neuromodulators shape cognition and use this knowledge to build computer models of how the brain works and how it goes awry in disease. He said -
“Winning a Lister Prize will help to advance my research program at Newcastle University. The flexibility of funding provided by a Lister Prize will allow me to build a multidisciplinary team to progress with this new research direction."
