Medanta, a prominent Indian hospital, has marked a milestone by pioneering the utilization of AI-driven Penumbra Lightning technology in treating pulmonary embolism.

Since July 2023, the hospital has successfully treated 25 cases of this critical and life-threatening condition using this innovative technology.

The Penumbra Lightning 12 F Catheter, equipped with artificial intelligence, has revolutionized the targeted removal of clots during endovascular procedures.

This cutting-edge approach not only expedites patient recovery but also significantly reduces blood loss, thereby minimizing complications such as anemia.

The inaugural patient, a 62-year-old man presenting severe deep vein thrombosis in his leg and a non-obstructive clot in his lung, underwent treatment with the Penumbra Lightning 12 F catheter.

The medical team efficiently eliminated the clots, providing immediate relief. Notably, the patient was discharged within 48 hours, underscoring the effectiveness of this novel treatment methodology.

Medanta Gurugram’s Division of Vascular & Endovascular Sciences conducted a conference aimed at advancing insights into this groundbreaking technology. Themed ‘Pulmonary Embolism: State-of-the-art Treatment and Scientific Updates,’ the event aimed to disseminate best practices for addressing this critical condition.

Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman and Managing Director at Medanta, highlighted the pivotal role of technology in enhancing recovery and outcomes for pulmonary embolism patients. He introduced the PEiRT (Pulmonary Embolism Interventions and Response Team) program, which focused on increasing awareness about the condition, available treatments, and improving health outcomes.
