Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai achieves a milestone with successful surgery on a patient with Myocardial Bridge.

Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital has accomplished a remarkable feat by conducting a successful surgery on a patient afflicted with a congenital heart vessel abnormality known as Myocardial Bridge. The complex procedure involved a Deroofing Myotomy and coronary artery bypass surgery.

Mohammad Waris, a 48-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh, underwent a life-saving surgery at Lilavati Hospital, addressing a rare heart condition called Myocardial Bridge. This condition involves a coronary artery passing beneath heart muscle instead of over it, leading to chest pain, reduced blood supply, heart attacks, and irregular heartbeat.

Despite enduring angina for four years and undergoing multiple medical treatments and angiographies, Waris continued to suffer. After experiencing a minor heart attack, he was referred to Lilavati Hospital where he was diagnosed with a Myocardial Bridge obstruction in his left anterior descending artery (LAD), a critical artery supplying the left ventricle.

Dr. Pavan Kumar, Cardiovascular Surgeon at Lilavati Hospital, led the surgical team in performing a Deroofing Myotomy procedure along with coronary artery bypass surgery.

The Deroofing Myotomy involves cutting and removing the heart muscle band over the artery to facilitate artery expansion and improve blood flow. Meanwhile, coronary artery bypass surgery creates an alternate path for blood flow using a healthy blood vessel from another part of the body.

Dr. Kumar emphasized the significance of surgery for symptomatic patients with Myocardial Bridge, stating the limitations of stent angioplasty due to potential stent fractures in such cases.

Expressing gratitude to Dr. Kumar and the team, Waris praised Lilavati Hospital for transforming his struggle into a tale of survival through their cutting-edge technology and treatment plan.

Lt Gen (Dr) V Ravishankar, Consultant Cardiovascular Surgeon and COO of Lilavati Hospital, commended the hospital's pivotal role as a beacon of hope for cardiovascular patients. He applauded the team's success in performing this intricate and rare surgery, reaffirming the hospital's commitment to delivering top-notch care and optimal outcomes for patients in need.
