People all over the world celebrate International Yoga Day annually on June 21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the day in 2014, and the UN General Assembly officially adopted it in 2015.

On International Yoga Day, people from different parts of the world come together to celebrate and acknowledge the benefits of yoga. Yoga enhances physical and mental health, alleviates stress, and boosts flexibility and strength.

Why Is It International Yoga Day Celebrated?

People around the world celebrate International Yoga Day every year on June 21, aiming to spread awareness about the Vedic practice of yoga and meditation. In 2023, it will mark the 9th year of International Yoga Day, and people across the globe will participate in its celebrations. This year, PM Narendra Modi will actively lead a yoga session from the UN headquarters.

Significance of International Yoga Day

People hold International Yoga Day in high regard as it holds great significance. The purpose of celebrating this day is to increase awareness about the advantages of yoga. Yoga encompasses numerous physical and mental benefits. India is the birthplace of the Ancient practice. This practice involves various physical exercises such as breathing and postures, as well as mental exercises like meditation or dhyan yog. Yoga fosters balance in life and facilitates spiritual growth while rejuvenating the body. It plays a crucial role in reducing stress, anxiety, depression, fear, and numerous other health ailments.

Here's what is happening in India on 9th international Yoga Day :

Rajnath Singh plans to participate in the Yoga Day event on board INS Vikrant

On the International Day of Yoga, Indian Navy members and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh would practise yoga on the locally built aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, the ministry announced on Tuesday.

The event will be attended on Wednesday by Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, his wife Kala Hari Kumar, who is the president of the Naval Welfare and Wellness Association, as well as other top Navy and Ministry of Defence officers.

9th International Yoga Day to be organised in Jabalpur by Dhankhar

The Yoga Protocol performance is being attended by the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Mangubhai Chhaganbhai Patel, the Chief Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the Ayush Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal, the Ayush Minister of State, Dr. Munjpara Mahendrabhai, and other dignitaries.

Minister of State for Culture Meenakshi Lekhi is joining the IDY event at Purana Qila in Delhi. The Ministry of Culture staff and officials are participating in the IDY celebrations.

In the town of Nurmahal Sarai, located in Jalandhar, Punjab, Minister of State for Culture, Arjun Ram Meghwal, graces the occasion as the Chief Guest, spearheading the International Day of Yoga (IDY) celebrations.

The Army will observe Yoga Day at over 100 locations along the borders, forming 'Bharatmala'

The Dong valley in Arunachal Pradesh, the Longewala sand dunes in Rajasthan, the glacial heights of Siachen in the north, the southern edge of Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are just a few of the border places where troops will undertake yoga sessions.

In the meantime, military and defence attaches from various countries in Delhi have been invited to a major ceremony being held at Delhi Cantonment, where Army Chief General Manoj Pande will be the chief guest.As part of the expanded Indo-Africa collaboration, Indian Army personnel stationed in UN mission areas and training teams as part of the UN contingents undertook an outreach programme in African nations.

Around 1200 tribal students will perform in 2 villages near Pune on International Yoga Day

Around 200 tribal students from government ashram shalas will do a series of yoga positions on top of a hill at Asane hamlet in Ambegaon tehsil, around 90 miles from Pune. Another 1000 tribal students from four government ashram shalas in Ghodegaon village would join them on the ground below.

Together with Dr Satya Laxmi, Director of NIN and the Integrated Tribal Development Project of the Maharashtra government, Dr. Divya Panwar, Medical Officer at the Tribal Unit, has been organising the activities. According to her statement, they have successfully reached out to over 3,000 tribal youth across six ashram shalas in a span of three years, actively promoting the adoption of yoga and naturopathy.
