India's medical tourism sector is booming, with rising demand for cosmetic surgeries and hair transplants. Affordable prices, skilled surgeons, and world-class facilities make India a preferred destination for high-quality treatments.
The medical tourism industry in India has steadily grown over the past few years, and recent data indicates that this trend will continue. The Ministry of Tourism's report reveals that India hosted over 500,000 medical tourists in 2019, generating revenue exceeding $3 billion. Although there was a decline in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, the figures rebounded in 2022 and surpassed the peak of 2019.
In terms of arrivals from several regions, the Ministry of Tourism reported in 2021 that a significant proportion of visitors from South Asia, specifically 68.4%, visited India for medical purposes. West Asia closely followed with 61.1%, and Africa accounted for 40.0% of arrivals falling under the medical category.
India has become a go-to destination for medical treatment among many neighbouring countries. It is noteworthy that 77.6% of the total arrivals from Bangladesh sought medical treatment. Similarly, for Afghanistan, 53.6% of the total arrivals were for medical purposes. This trend continues with arrivals from Maldives, where an overwhelming 85.8% came seeking medical treatment. Lastly, an impressive 94.7% of arrivals from Iraq specifically came for medical purposes. These statistics underscore India's prominence as a preferred destination for medical tourism from various countries in the region.
According to the ministry's report, the number of medical tourists visiting India has been increasing at a rate of 22-25% per year. This growth can be attributed to various factors, including the affordability of treatment, quality of medical facilities, availability of skilled doctors and surgeons, and the opportunities for tourism.
Patients from around the world actively seek treatment for severe ailments and complicated surgeries in India. India is also widely regarded as a preferred destination for hair transplant and cosmetic surgeries, including liposuction, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, facelifts, and tummy tucks. These treatments attract patients not only from neighbouring countries and the Asia-Pacific region but also from developed nations worldwide. The reasons for the increasing number of people choosing India for hair transplant and cosmetic surgeries can be attributed to the following factors:
Cost
Cosmetic surgeries and hair transplants in India cost significantly less than in countries like the US, the UK, or Australia. This affordability makes it an appealing option for individuals seeking high-quality cosmetic procedures at a more affordable price.
Quality of Hospitals and Clinics
India boasts numerous clinics and hospitals that are well-equipped with state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and infrastructure, ensuring the provision of safe and effective treatments.
Skilled Surgeons
Indian surgeons have earned a reputation for their exceptional skills and expertise in conducting cosmetic surgeries. A significant number of them have received training and worked in renowned medical institutions worldwide.
Reduced Waiting Time
Developed countries often have lengthy waiting lists for cosmetic surgeries. In India, patients can undergo their surgeries swiftly and efficiently, eliminating the need for prolonged waiting periods.
Tourism
India is a highly sought-after tourist destination, and individuals often choose to combine their cosmetic surgery treatments with a vacation, enhancing the overall experience and making it more enjoyable and unforgettable.
The Indian government recognises the potential of medical tourism and actively promotes it. The Ministry of Tourism, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has taken several initiatives to establish India as a premier destination for medical tourism. These initiatives involve the establishment of a medical tourism board, simplification of visa procedures, and the creation of medical tourism facilitation centers in major cities.
Moreover, India's healthcare infrastructure is continuously advancing to meet the growing demand for medical tourism. The government has increased the budget allocation for healthcare, while private entities are making significant investments in the industry. As a result, world-class hospitals and clinics with state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure have emerged.
The medical tourism sector in India is positioned for substantial growth, driven by the growing acknowledgment of the benefits of accessing high-quality healthcare at affordable prices. Specifically, the cosmetic surgery industry in the country has witnessed a remarkable surge in recent years, and this trend is projected to continue in the foreseeable future.
