Gujarat celebrates a medical breakthrough as Apollo Hospitals in Ahmedabad performs its first infant liver transplant.
Apollo Hospitals in Ahmedabad successfully completed Gujarat's first infant liver transplant on a seven-month-old infant with Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis, a genetic condition causing jaundice and liver deterioration.
The infant's mother generously donated her liver for a liver transplant, led by Professor Dr. Darius Mirza, despite the infant's small stature and susceptibility to infection, which lasted 8-10 hours, overcoming numerous challenges.
The transplant proved to be a success, and the infant is currently in a stable recovery. To cover the expenses, the hospital managed to gather ₹16 lakh from a variety of sources.
Neeraj Lal, COO, Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, said, “Prof Dr Darius Mirza’s international experience benefits patients and sets new healthcare standards.”
