FICCI and KPMG India presented a report titled 'Shaping India's Future Healthcare Landscape' at FICCI HEAL 2023, examining the transformation of healthcare delivery in India, identifying determinants, obstacles, and the significance of modern approaches.

In the next decade, healthcare delivery methods will undergo a transformation, combining established frameworks with innovative models, resulting in significant advancements across various health service facets.

  • Self-care models - Self-care, an essential component of daily living, spans from promoting health to preventing and managing diseases. It encompasses fitness and wellness initiatives, mental health support, nutritional planning, health condition management, and regular health screenings. The core of self-care models revolves around empowering individuals to make informed choices regarding their healthcare.
  • Primary care & pre-hospitalization models - The primary care service landscape in India has experienced a significant transformation, merging traditional primary care centers with online providers. This integrated approach seeks to offer a more holistic and inclusive range of services, encompassing primary care clinics, specialized care centers, telehealth services, diagnostics, and coordinated healthcare.
  • Hospital care models - Over the last ten years, healthcare institutions and hospitals have undergone a remarkable evolution. In addition to medical treatment, wellness retreats have emerged, providing comprehensive well-being experiences. Hospital care models now encompass a variety of options, including multi-specialty, single specialty, super specialty hospitals, surgical care management via network hospitals, transition care facilities, health and wellness centers, as well as small healthcare organizations (SHCOs).
  • Post-hospitalization care models - Following hospitalization, ensuring continuity of care is crucial. Post-hospitalization care encompasses home healthcare, remote health management, rehabilitation centers, and long-term care facilities.

The success of healthcare transformation in India hinges on collaboration between government, payers, private health providers, and emerging new-age providers, with ten key enablers identified to support the implementation of innovative delivery models.

  • Evolving Consumer Attitudes and Self-Directed Care: The upcoming decade will witness the rise of informed healthcare consumers who take an active role in their healthcare choices.
  • Fostering Community Participation: Engaging patients, families, and communities in healthcare service planning and implementation is of paramount importance.
  • Embracing Population Health Management: This approach centers on addressing the health requirements of entire populations, moving beyond individual patient care.
  • Innovative Provider Approaches: This transition places patient-centered and technology-enhanced specialized care at the forefront, emphasizing individualized healthcare.
  • Technology and Data-Powered Healthcare: Digital tools and data-driven services offer real-time, tailored healthcare solutions.
  • Synergistic Alliances and Partnerships: Collaborations between healthcare providers, payers, and technology companies foster knowledge and resource sharing, ultimately enhancing patient results.
  • Healthcare Financing: Policies such as subsidies, tax incentives, and public insurance are vital in ensuring accessible and high-quality care for all.
  • Future Healthcare Workforce: Preparing for the evolving demands of the expanding healthcare value chain is imperative.
  • Sectoral Reforms: Elevating the healthcare sector through awareness, innovation, and collaboration can enhance service delivery in the context of new-age healthcare models.
  • Lalit Mistry, Partner and Co-Head of the Healthcare Sector at KPMG in India, highlighted the importance of data security and privacy in the digital healthcare sector. He highlighted the ongoing evolution in the Indian healthcare landscape, which is reshaping healthcare delivery by integrating established infrastructure and systems with innovative models.
