Read about the groundbreaking kidney transplant, a 58-year-old woman receiving organs from a brain-dead toddler. Unveiling medical triumph at Hyderabad hospital.

A 58-year-old woman in Hyderabad underwent a kidney transplant from a 14-month-old brain-dead child. The surgery was complicated due to the recipient's dialysis history and heart condition. Doctors emphasized that organ donation is no longer a barrier due to organ size or age.

Dr. Umamaheswara Rao, a consultant urologist and renal transplant surgeon at KIMS Hospital, led the team performing kidney transplant surgery. He emphasized the need for various surgeries to save patients' lives, as organ availability remains a significant challenge in transplantation cases. He said -

“This surgery is done to overcome all boundaries like age and size. It gave new hope to the patient. Many aspects had to be carefully considered. We have to see the size of the collected kidney and the possibility of the recipient’s body’s acceptance. The kidney grows in the human body until the age of three years. After that, it is fully grown and functional.”

Dr Rao further added -

“After the transplantation too, it grows in the body of the recipient. In some cases, when the kidney of a young person is transplanted to an older person, there are problems such as thrombus (blood clot) in the arteries. However, in this case, there is no such thing.”

He stated that transplanting the kidneys harvested from a small baby to a 58-year-old patient was a bold decision. He added, "We completed this surgery with utmost success, taking all kinds of precautions." He credited the team of doctors and staff, and most importantly, the bereaved family, for the brave gesture.
