The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) launches proactive measures to combat dengue, emphasizing community engagement and awareness on National Dengue Day. Despite global factors contributing to dengue's rise, Mumbai records a decrease in cases through consistent preventive efforts.
In a proactive effort to tackle the escalating threat of dengue fever, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated comprehensive measures to engage the community in preventive actions.
Marking National Dengue Day on May 16, the BMC rolled out a series of programs aimed at raising public awareness and fostering community participation in combating the spread of the disease.
Under the theme "Connect with Community, Control Dengue," BMC's executive health officer, Dr. Daksha Shah, underscored the importance of collaborative efforts in controlling dengue. Various departments within the corporation have launched initiatives to promote community involvement and educate the public on preventive measures against dengue.
Dr. Shah highlighted global factors contributing to the rise in dengue cases, including climate change-induced phenomena such as global warming and excessive rainfall. These conditions create a conducive environment for the breeding of dengue mosquitoes, particularly the Aedes aegypti species, which thrives in warm and humid climates.
Despite facing challenges posed by environmental factors, Mumbai has seen a decrease in reported dengue cases, with only 296 cases documented from January 2024 to May 2024 compared to 5,486 cases in 2023. Dr. Shah attributed this decline to the BMC's consistent implementation of preventive measures and public awareness campaigns.
The BMC commissioner has issued directives for the regular enforcement of preventive measures, with the public health department actively conducting campaigns to educate residents on dengue control strategies both at home and within the community. These efforts include awareness programs, targeted campaigns, and the implementation of preventive measures at the departmental level.
As Mumbai intensifies its fight against dengue, the BMC's proactive approach underscores its commitment to safeguarding public health and fostering community resilience in the face of mosquito-borne diseases. Through collaborative efforts and sustained preventive actions, the city aims to mitigate the impact of dengue and ensure the well-being of its residents.
