In a medical breakthrough, Bhatia Hospital in Mumbai conducted its first successful Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure on a 78-year-old woman with severe aortic stenosis.
A 78-year-old woman in Mumbai underwent a successful transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) procedure, resulting in significant improvement in her health and a reduction in persistent health issues.
A woman with severe aortic stenosis underwent multiple medical evaluations but remained undiagnosed until a 2D echocardiogram revealed the condition. Due to her age and the complexity of valve replacement surgery, Bhatia Hospital's medical experts recommended the TAVI procedure.
The Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) procedure symbolizes a patient-centered approach, providing a minimally invasive option for cardiac patients. This recent advancement in cardiology has revolutionized the field over the past half-decade by replacing the aortic valve through a leg artery, resulting in enhanced patient comfort, quicker recovery times, and reduced risks when compared to conventional open-heart surgery.
This was the first TAVI procedure performed by doctors at Bhatia Hospital. Dr Ajay Pandey, Interventional Cardiologist at Bhatia Hospital, said, “Valve replacements are now more affordable, thanks to government initiatives and ‘Made in India’ valves. Costs have decreased by 30-40 percent, making it a viable option.”
