Read about the heartwarming story of a mother's liver donation saving her baby's life in Karnataka.

A three-month-old infant in Kolkata saved by liver donation received liver transplant surgery at Aster CMI Hospital, Bengaluru. The youngest patient in Karnataka underwent the procedure, funded through CSR, crowdfunding, and hospital support.

The baby suffered from liver failure due to biliary atresia, a condition that scars and blocks the bile ducts inside and outside the liver. Unfortunately, the diagnosis came after the critical time period, causing permanent liver damage, and a lesser procedure couldn't manage the condition at that point.

Aster CMI Hospital in Bengaluru performed a lifesaving organ transplant operation for a child, despite challenges due to the child's young age and size. The procedure, led by Dr. Sonal Asthana, Mallikarjun Sakpal, Dr. Karthik Raichurkar, Dr. V Arun, and Dr. Noushad, was successful.

After the surgery, the baby made a full recovery during the 16-day stay in the pediatric ICU. The infant is now healthy, free of jaundice, and gaining weight well.

Dr Sonal Asthana, Lead Consultant – Hepatobiliary & Transplant Surgery at Aster CMI Hospital, highlighted the significant need for liver transplants in India, especially among children like this baby suffering from biliary atresia. The hospital takes pride in providing subsidized liver transplant surgery, made possible through CSR, crowdfunding, and support from hospitals and pharmaceutical companies.

S Ramesh Kumar, CEO – Aster Hospitals, Bengaluru, expressed pride in their accomplishment as the first in Karnataka to perform such a complex surgery on a three-month-old infant. He emphasized that skilled doctors and advanced hospital technologies played crucial roles in the successful procedure, which can lead to healthy and normal lives when performed timely.
