In a significant milestone, the Nuclear Medicine Department at the American Oncology Institute (AOI) located within Nangia Specialty Hospital has successfully treated 125 thyroid cancer patients using Radio Iodine therapy since its inception in April 2022.
Thyroid disorders have been a prevalent health concern, as highlighted by a survey conducted across 29 districts of Maharashtra, revealing a 2.9 percent prevalence of adult hypothyroidism. Radio Iodine therapy, also known as radioactive iodine therapy, emerges as a crucial intervention for thyroid cancer, utilizing radioactive iodine to target and destroy thyroid cells.
Dr. Rohit Kakde, Head of the Nuclear Medicine Department, and Dr. Hrushikesh Phate, Facility Director, both from AOI at Nangia Specialty Hospital, expressed their pride in this achievement. Dr. Kakde stated, "We are proud of this achievement. The hospital's commitment to providing healthcare to the community is strong."
AOI at Nangia Specialty Hospital not only provides cutting-edge treatment options but also prioritizes patient safety and environmental responsibility. The hospital's nuclear medicine department boasts an isolation ward and a comprehensive radioactive waste management system. This includes a dedicated sewage tank designed for the safe disposal of radioactive waste generated during nuclear medicine procedures, ensuring a commitment to environmental sustainability.
It is noteworthy that the hospital has actively participated in the Government's MJPJAY (Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana) scheme, demonstrating its dedication to making advanced medical care accessible to a broader spectrum of the population.
This accomplishment underscores AOI's commitment to advancing medical care and achieving significant milestones in the realm of nuclear medicine. The successful treatment of 125 thyroid cancer patients reflects the institute's dedication to not only treating diseases but also contributing to the overall well-being of the community it serves.
